DESCRIPTION:When a certain fellow by the name of Harvey Weinstein discovered that his company\, Miramax\, had failed to acquire the American distribution rights for Run Lola Run\, the German breakout hit on everyone’s tongue in 1998\, he was understandably furious.\nLess understandably\, perhaps\, he reacted by throwing a lit cigarette in the face of the poor junior exec responsible for the deal falling through.\nThat exec was Jason Blum\, whose ascent seems to be inversely proportional to Weinstein’s deserved downfall.\nBut it’s a wound searing enough to deserve recounting.\nThe film in question\, we’re happy to report\, has lost none of its sting either. Both a time-capsule of that late-90s indie spirit and so brisk and simple to be timelessly enjoyable\, this is a cinematic experience for whom the term ‘hi-octane’ appears to have been invented.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook event page \n

He may have squandered a plethora of goodwill with the misjudged atrocities that were Batman Forever and Batman & Robin\, but this prolific hit-churner also gifted us with The Lost Boys\, Falling Down\, Phone Booth…\nAmong his pile-up of hit-and-miss crowd-pleasers\, one will find submerged a diamond in the rough which now serves to eulogise two cinematic geniuses.\nFlawless stars the equally missed Philip Seymour Hoffman in a crime-comedy from that hallowed year of 1999\, which co-stars none other than Robert De Niro and\, refreshingly\, introduces us to a transgender protagonist portrayed with verve\, wit\, and no hint of patronising sentimentality.\nSure\, it’s still representationally un-ideal\, but then again\, it’s Seymour Hoffman we’re talking about here.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook event page \n

DESCRIPTION:It’s a good thing that celebrity culture was eradicated from this earth entirely soon after this darkly satirical cult classic made its way to the multiplexes back in 1995.\nIt’s not like what used to be ‘limited’ to merely TV and print magazines has now spilled over onto palm-portable little machines that help us to not only mainline celebrity news and gossip\, but to have our own stab at it.\nSure\, Gus van Sant remains a seminal filmmaker and To Die For will continue to be seen as a fine example of the kind of smart\, incisive storytelling this popular-AND-acclaimed artist has become known for. Nicole Kidman makes for a ravishing femme fatale any day of the week\, and seeing a super-young Joaquin Phoenix\, Matt Dillon and Casey Affleck will add to its curiosity factor.\nSo it’s a shame that this story of a woman who will literally do anything — and anyONE — for her stab at fame has sadly lost all relevance nowadays. But alas\, those who pay no attention to history are doomed to repeat it\, and all that.\nGrab a stiff drink from the bar and prime your instincts for some guilty pleasures… because this evil is all the more blissful for being so readily recognisable.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook event page \n
